THE PERSONALITIES OF THE COLLECTIVE

The personalities of the Summit Foundation Collective bring together inspiring men and women: athletes, adventurers, entrepreneurs, artists and photographers, who share a strong bond with the mountains and nature, and choose to put their image and voice at the service of their protection.

United by common values and a desire to act concretely, they commit alongside Summit Foundation to raise awareness, inspire and mobilize as many people as possible in the face of environmental issues that affect our living and passion areas.

"By picking up litter so often along our rivers and hiking trails in the summer, and on the slopes in winter and after the snow melts, Summit Foundation's commitment has always seemed obvious to me. Joining their Collective and carrying its message for the preservation of our mountains and natural environment is a modest but essential contribution."

"Zelfino is a Swiss painter who explores the mountains by attributing emotion, color, texture and medium to them, making each work a sensitive and immersive interpretation of these landscapes. Through his work, he expresses a sincere and almost meditative attachment to Alpine landscapes. He attaches essential importance to the preservation and cleanliness of the mountains, a direct reflection of the unconditional love he has for them."

"Mountain environments are unique ecosystems, characterised by remarkable biodiversity but also by their high vulnerability to environmental change. Although they are often perceived as pristine areas, they are not immune to contamination (e.g. microplastics, tyre particles, organic micropollutants), which can originate from local activities or be transported over long distances through the atmosphere. In this context, environmental chemistry research plays a key role. By identifying the contaminants present and studying their origin, fate and effects on ecosystems, it helps us better understand the pressures affecting these sensitive environments. This knowledge is essential for anticipating risks, guiding protective measures and contributing to the long-term preservation of mountain environments and the natural resources they contain."

"I discovered Lake Geneva and the mountains later in life. Since then, they have become much more than just a playground – an obvious thing to preserve and cherish. So that we and future generations can continue to experience their beauty, I have chosen to commit myself alongside Summit Foundation."

"The call of the mountains made me migrate to the Alps over thirty years ago. I have dedicated most of my life to the mountains while wondering what attracted me so much to them. And then I understood. It was not simply the powder fields to glide on, nor the impenetrable forests to get lost in. What called me so strongly was the possibility of traveling through a raw environment, untouched by any trace of civilization (or almost). To witness timeless moments, like at the dawn of the World. So when I come across filth, my blood boils at first, then I calm down by picking up this trash. At my own level, little by little, I clean up what can be cleaned. And I feel better."

Having been interested in ecology for many years, I am currently conducting research in the field of the environmental history of mountain regions. I am particularly interested in leisure, sports and tourism. My research focuses primarily on Switzerland, but the aim is to place these studies within a broader process linked to the transnational circulation of ideas, knowledge and people, as well as to global issues. Through this research, I seek to understand how new practices involving nature, or taking place in nature, became established in the physical and mental landscape of our country throughout the 20th century, while also examining the other side of the story: opposition, externalities such as waste, and so on. I have known the Summit Foundation since the 2000s and, from the very beginning, I greatly admired its approach. For a while, I even imagined myself joining the organisation as a civil service volunteer! Taking care of our environment seems like a logical thing to do, and yet the further I progress through life and develop my thinking, the more I realise that our way of life in Western societies genuinely goes against this vision. I try to do what I can, with my strengths and weaknesses as well as my own contradictions. In this respect, the strength of history lies in bringing to light the processes that have led to the world we live in, while also taking failures, mistakes and other forms of resistance into account. It is therefore a good way of nurturing a certain sense of utopia that helps us move forward in the face of the current environmental situation, which, even when remaining positive, is rather bleak, to say the least. In this regard, Switzerland, contrary to the idyllic and pristine image that is often associated with our mountains, is also deeply affected by these forms of degradation. This is why I appreciate Summit Foundation’s campaigns, which confront these issues head-on and call for greater responsibility from all actors and members of society, from public authorities and multinational corporations to individuals like myself!
