PFAS IN THE SNOW

The study of PFAS in snow is a student research project launched in 2025 in collaboration with the EPFL. Its aim is to quantify the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Swiss ski resorts. These chemical compounds, used in ski waxing products to improve glide performance, are released into the environment during snowmelt. Persistent and toxic, they pose a threat to alpine ecosystems and human health.

Despite the ban on fluorinated ski waxes imposed by the FIS in 2023, studies show that contamination levels remain high. This project aims to assess the level of pollution and provide a scientific tool to support new environmental regulations.

Beyond science, PFAS & Mountain seeks to raise awareness local players to encourage sustainable practices and preserve Alps and winter activities.
